Funding Opportunity Description

The WV-INBRE program has funds for the acquisition of equipment for use in biomedical research. This solicitation is open to applications from investigators at West Virginia primarily undergraduate institutions (PUIs) and community and technical colleges (CTCs) that are part of the WV-INBRE network.

Program Goal: To provide instrumentation for use in biomedical research and to improve the biomedical research capacity of WV-INBRE network institutions.

Preference: Shared instrumentation that supports ongoing or proposed biomedical research and use of computational resources for biomedical research.

Eligibility

  • All WV-INBRE undergraduate partner institutions (PUIs) and CTCs
  • Tenure-track or tenured faculty only
  • One application per institution (multiple instruments allowed)

Equipment Requirements

  • Cost per item: $5,000+
  • Total request: Up to $75,000
  • Software required for instrument operation allowed

Vendor quote for each requested instrument
Equipment justification

Equipment Justification Must Include:

  • Description of the instrument(s) and functions/capabilities
  • Listing of likely users (faculty, staff, students)
  • Examples of how the instrument(s) will be used
  • Indication if instrument will support ongoing or proposed WV-INBRE research

Note: Institutional matching funds are not required but may be used to pay for equipment costs in excess of the $75,000 threshold.

Review Process & Criteria

Primary Review Criteria
  • Overall significance and relevance to biomedical or computational research
  • Support of ongoing or future biomedical or computational research
Timeline
  • Review Process: ~4 weeks
  • Notification: February 2026

Review Process: Applications will be reviewed and ranked by the WV-INBRE Administrative Core. Funding recommendations require NIGMS approval.

Responsibilities of Equipment Grant Recipients

Required Actions

  • Acknowledge WV-INBRE Grant in all publications and presentations (P20GM103434)
  • Track instrument usage when possible
  • Submit usage reports as part of annual progress report

Usage Reports Should Include

  • Number of uses (e.g., runs)
  • Number of unique users

Important: Equipment must arrive prior to July 31, 2026, and in compliance with institutional grants management policy.
